This is one of the best campgrounds in Northern California. The staff was helpful and friendly. The activities for the kids were varied and fun. The restrooms were very clean. This is a high-energy park with lots of activity. Furthermore, it is located in the center of one of the most vibrant family vacation spots in America. Expect to pay for the best. You'll pay much less in the middle of Kansas, but the Pacific Ocean is much further away. We will return to this first-rate campground many times. One of the many positive features of this park are the many large, beautiful trees which provide shade and atmosphere. Finally, we took the campground's tour of San Francisco. It was wonderful and led by a knowledgeable and skillful tour guide.
These comments are for Fort Wilderness as a campground. My family's been going to WDW and Disneyland several times a year for many years. In our opinion, staying on-site turns the Disney experience from a nice place to go into a wonderful resort vacation. At WDW, the availability of the dining plan makes the on-site stay even more pleasant. To get this option, one must stay on-site. Fort Wilderness is a terrific campground. We camped in a B+ (small motorhome), so the tight turns and (sometimes) smaller sites are not an issue. This campground is perhaps the most "B-friendly" one around. They give you what you ask for without bias based upon the size of your rig. The bathrooms and showers are modern and clean. The sites are cleaned thoroughly after the previous camper departs. The few minor things that go wrong are attended to quickly and competently. Here are a few things I'd like to see Walt fix: stop charging for Wifi ($10 a day is outrageous); add more bathrooms; alter the automated sink mechanisms to allow me to adjust the temperature of the water. The high daily fee simply reflects the location. We think it is well worth it.
Mama Gertie's is a terrific campground as long as you remember a few things. First the positives: absolutely spotless bathrooms and showers; separate shower rooms with a full. lockable door; clean, pleasant, sites; free Wifi; spotless laundry room with excellent washers and dryers; convenient reading room with dial-up modem line plus a free phone for making 1-800 calls. The owners are on-site and obviously know what campers need. Now the things to be aware of. The following are inherent features of the facility: access road is narrow and all uphill; the final entry to the campground requires faith (it is on a blind curve); the entire campground is on the side of a hill, with the facilities at the bottom (the owners will give you a lift in their cart, if needed); watch out for the gravel as you walk up & down the hill (it is easy to slip); there is little for small children to do. On this visit (only), the young man at the desk put us in a back-in site when pull-throughs were available. I normally don't mind this, but the site required backing up a fairly steep gravel hill. I haven't made that much gravel fly since I was a teenager (500 years ago). Finally, this campground does not appear to have a late check-in option. The security bar cannot be opened once the office is shut (usually about 8:00pm). If you are running late, you better check. We camped in a B+ (small motorhome).
We've used several campgrounds in the Pigeon Forge area. Creekside is the pick of the lot. The bathroom/shower upgrades were a significant improvement. Land is expensive in this area, so don't expect lots of space. If you need a big site and want distance between you and your neighbor, you'll have to stay far out of town. If you want a clean, convenient location as a base to visit the area, Creekside will do nicely.
We just stopped for the night. The staff was friendly and helpful. The bathrooms were dated, but OK. One (of 3) shower stalls was out of service in the men's room. The view of the mountains at sunset was a nice treat. Furthermore, the location was about a mile off the interstate, which kept the noise to a minimum. Our only problem was an encounter with a fire ants soon after we set up. Having dealt with these little monsters when I lived in the South, I immediately un-hooked and requested another site. The management was most helpful and we relocated to a bug-free site.
Good place for overnight or several days. The new owners are young, hard-working, and friendly. They are trying to make the facility more family oriented to serve as a destination. This place is immediately off the Blue Ridge Parkway. Watch the signs carefully or you'll get a tour of Fancy Gap. Also, read the "Rates" section of the web site carefully, especially if you have a large party or need 50 amp service. The bathrooms are very clean and reflect the owners' commitment to excellence.
Consider this campground as a possible destination, especially if you have kids. The owners seemed to work hard to provide large, grassy fields, play areas, activities for kids a bit older, and reasonably clean bathrooms and showers. Furthermore, the kids probably will not mind staying near one the most disgusting lakes (ponds) in the entire state. Kids don't have to worry about cramped sites, no place to park your truck, or worrying about whether your awning will be in the way of the next rig to go by. We were in a 22 foot B+, and still stuck out into the road a bit! They have the slowest WiFi I've ever experienced, but you have to sit outside the camp store to use it. In other words, I do not consider this a good overnight stopping place.
This is primarily a 55+ winter time snowbird campground. It is a fine park, however, for a stopover. It is safe, quiet, and clean with lots of nice space for a walk. The bathrooms were very clean, but dated. With only one shower, two toilets, and two sinks (one for the guys), it was good that there were only a few overnighters. Definitely use this park while traveling through on I-75.
This is a great place for stopping for the night when passing through the area. The park seemed safe, very clean, somewhat quiet, and the staff friendly and helpful. The bathrooms were outstanding: clean, in good working order, and included new tile and fixtures. Since this state has lots of rain and bugs, the park wisely paves all sites and roads. Again, if you need a good place for the night, this park seems to be a good choice.
An outstanding park! We only stayed for the night as we were traveling through. We would love to return soon to take the train ride and see the canyon again. A new park, everything was new, worked great, and looked terrific. I recommend you check out their web site to see the train trip details. If you have kids, they will love this place (pool, playground, basketball and volleyball courts, etc. As a final note, you'll have to look far and wide to find cleaner, more appealing bathrooms.
A great destination campground. See the web site and other reviews to get a sense of all the things to do. We were just passing through, and it rained the entire time, so we did not get to enjoy the many options available. Nevertheless, we were comfortable in this newer, clean, and efficient location. The individual bathrooms (toilet, basin, & shower) are wonderful.
